technology and learning connections, a part of Florida's multi-tiered system of supports.
July 2010
The Assistant Superintendant for ESE, the FDLRS Acting Supervisor and the Supervisor of Technology met to discuss the implications of using the Kindles with ESE students. It was determined that IEP teams would not meet to address access issues unless there was a specific need. The FDLRS Technology Specialist was designated as the liaison between the school and the ESE department. She would work with the school to determine necessary accommodations.

The FDLRS Technology Resource Teacher, 2 of the district LATS, the Behavior Specialist and VE Specialist met to discuss the accommodations available on the Kindle and student use at that time. Since students had not received their Kindles yet, we decided to reconvene on
October 4th.

During the time between meetings, the school based personnel would monitor the Kindle use by ESE students. If needed, we would reconvene at an earlier date.

The school based staff showed the Kindle to the district staff. Positive and negative features of the Kindle were discussed.

Even though the Kindles were available, students still had the option of using only textbooks. English and math textbooks were not available at that time for the Kindle.

October 4, 2010
The team met to review the level of success of ESE students using the Kindle. At that time, the students using the Kindle were meeting desired goals. Students on Special Diploma were given alternative text and assignments to help them meet success. They also had the option of using voice output to read the text. Not all students on Special Diploma were using the Kindle. Some chose to continue using textbooks.

One student using a DynaVox for communication also used a Kindle. At this time, he was being successful reading the text.

The team agreed to meet again in another month.
